As a holistic veterinarian and scientist, Dr. Gary Richter helps dog and cat owners to navigate the thicket of treatment options and separate the fact from the fiction. He wants us to use what actually works, not just what Western science or alternative medicine say “should” work. This multifaceted approach to health is known as integrative medicine.
Dr. Richter examines traditional medicine from many cultures alongside modern medical techniques, describing the best of complementary care and the best of conventional veterinary medicine. Every treatment he recommends has the backing of scientific research or years of successful outcomes in his clinical practice. After explaining the treatment, he offers specific recommendations for an integrative approach to common diseases, including allergies, skin conditions, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
A holistic approach to health includes nutrition, as it sets up the foundation for your pet’s health. Dr. Richter cuts through the hype in the pet-food world and explains how to choose the best commercial foods and supplements, and even includes both raw and cooked dog- and cat-food recipes for general diet as well as to treat specific needs. He also explains how we can use the right foods and supplements to “hack” the body’s processes, including the immune system.

Excellent Recipes
Thereâs a lot of excellent information in this book for pet owners. The information on different diseases is very comprehensive. I particularly like the sections on nutrition and home-made recipes. Although it took a little bit of effort to locate and buy all of the supplements, Iâm glad to know that the recipes Iâm making for our 12 year old Miniature Pinscher are nutritionally sound. I wish there were more recipes and that substitutes were listed for some of the fresh ingredients. Also, I wish the recipe yield was also given in cups, in addition to grams (I can convert to ounces easily enough but cups is how most people feed their pets and thatâs harder to do unless you make the entire recipe first and measure the number of cups you get).

Great Info for Dogs and Cats
This is an excellent book on pet health. The author uses both conventional and naturopathic treatment methods so he is extremely knowledgeable about nearly everything re: pet health and creating longevity with pet lives.

Good Book, printer must have ran out of Ink
The book was good enough to add to my pet book collection. However, my review is about something other than the information in the book as it is about the printing. The paper is cheap and the ink is far too light. Perhaps the printer was low on ink. I have good eyesight but this is way too strenuous to read for more than a few minutes. What a disappointment!

All dog and cat owners should be required to read this book
I pre-ordered this book and waited rather impatiently for it to arrive for weeks because of all the good things I had heard about what was going to be in it. We had recently just gotten a rescue dog (german shepard) and were having all sorts of problems with his health. Based on Dr. Richter’s advice, we made some changes to his diet and had a massive, immediate improvement. When the book arrived (finally!) my wife and I tore into it right away. Usually when I have hyped myself up for something in advance, when I get it, it ends up falling well short of my expectations. With this book, the opposite occurred. It’s just so thorough. Yet even though there is a LOT to this book, it is easy to understand, follow and benefit from!We also have two cats and I look forward to applying what I learned in this book to their diet and overall well being as well.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
I have had more than one occasion to recommend this book to people in stores, family, even my vet and local animal rescues! My new kitten loves the first recipe with chicken, chicken liver and green beans. I overheard a lady in a store that was upset because her vet had recommended a VERY expensive food for her cat’s pancreatitis and I told her about the recipe for just that condition in this book. She was relieved because I had just saved her a LOT of money! Shortly after getting this book my daughter’s dog got sick and we started using one of the recipes in this book. She’s getting better! I highly recommend this book. This year alone I lost two of my most beloved dogs and I’d bet my social security it was largely due to kibble, even though I bought what research had told me was pretty good stuff for them. I am devastated! I saw the infomercial on this book and ordered it right away. You have to buy a lot of supplements in the beginning, but once you get past that (they last forever), the food you put in each recipe actually ends up costing far less than the pet food in the stores. And pet food, whether canned or dry, cat or dog, is COSTING MORE AND MORE! I thought I couldn’t afford to feed my pets like this. I was wrong. And I sleep better knowing I’m giving my fur babies food that really is healthy and safe!

Literally Brilliant!!!! Love!!!
Thank you for writing this book Dr. Richter!!!! More than I hoped for. Perfect layman book to help navigate medical appointments with our veterinarian. This book goes over the ailments your dog and cat can have so you know what to expect from your vet and how best to approach each situation. I am really excited to try the recipes and learn what herbal remedies can help each of my dogs. This book lists what herbs, supplements and probiotics are best for each medical situation. Love this book!!! Itâs going to help me be the best pet mom I can be. Very grateful to own such a book!!! (Yes it is a bit medical so if you are looking for something with less medical terminology you can ignore those parts and get straight to learning about the herbal and supplemental treatments towards the back. Worth every penny just to get the homemade recipes!!!)

Love this book, there is a wealth of information for dog and cat owners to help their pets. It described ever disease possible that you dog or cat can suffer with and how you can help your pet recover. This is from diagnosis to considering veterinarian care or complementary and herbal medicine. It provide an in-depth understanding of nutrition, ingredients, preparation and a balanced diet. I definitely recommend this book to all dog/cat owners as it is the ultimate pet health guide.

Un poco limitado por el paradigma cientÃfico. Muy explicativo y es de los pocos libros que informan sobre el uso medicinal del cannabis.

So informative! I really appreciated all the wonderful information in this book and feel better equiped to take care of and feed my dog real food and not the craps marketers sell as kibble or canned food. Even the premium dry dog food is terrible for my fur babies!
