When Hannah Branigan began training her first dog for obedience competition, she wanted to play the game but train using positive reinforcement. She quickly discovered that traditional methods weren’t for her and that she had to throw out the old playbook. Clicker trainers like me look at the problem completely differently, she says. We break down skills into easily mastered bits and pieces that we then link into behavior chains to produce flashy heeling and snappy drops on recall. Hannah built a new training program from the ground up. The results were awesome. Her dogs have competed successfully at the national level, earning High-in-Trial awards and advanced titles through several organizations. These strategies have transformed training for hundreds of teams, who also believe in the power of positive reinforcement and good training practices. In Awesome Obedience, Hannah lays out all the components to build the behaviors needed to go as far in obedience training as you want. You ll learn: How to create a happy, reliable partner using motivational games Where to put your efforts (hint: not in Fronts and Finishes) How the mechanics of exercises affect training How to fine-tune your dog s arousal level for maximum performance How to train your dog to ignore ring distractions (like that judge following you around) How to train the critical, unscored transition portion of your performance between exercises Most of all, how to have a blast with your dog while you train

Hannah has magic powers and you should buy the book
Disclaimer: I havenât read the book in its entirety yet, but I donât need to in order to write this review. Also, you can skip to the last paragraph for the specific book content review.I am a devout listener of Hannahâs podcast, Drinking from the Toilet (best podcast name ever btw), and have had this book at the top of my wishlist waiting for the inevitable lack of impulse control. I say that because I am not rich and buying books is a luxury, but I also have a significant decrease in impulse control (or stimulus control hehehe) when the monthly blood sacrifice happens. (Oh shush itâs a part of life and I have every right to call it something that makes me giggle).Ok ok Iâll get to the review⦠I am neurodivergent with a particular emphasis on not being able to concentrate. On anything. Yay. However, Hannahâs podcast and now her book magically make that disappear. I donât know how – sheâs just magic. Outside of my favorite fantasy fiction novels I have to set low, achievable criteria with reinforcement afterwards to read. Sometimes this means a paragraph at a time (I told you it was bad!). I set my criteria, placed 3 starburst off to the side, and opened Awesome Obedience. I started reading and completely forgot about the criteria and the starburst (that second one still shocks me). As I was reading my dog jumped up on the bed and startled me⦠and thatâs when I realized I was in Chapter 5. Just like that. Magic.Besides the magical powers she has, Hannahâs book is detailed without being overwhelming. The flow from one part to the next is perfection. She breaks up the text so that instead of there being walls of words, there are photos, graphics, charts, and lists mixed in that make the whole book easy on the eyes. She didnât sacrifice her personality, which is beautiful and witty, when writing this book and thatâs probably one of my favorite things about it. Itâs extremely well-written while also being easy to read and the contents soak in well. It doesn’t have textbook vibes like other books in the field of dog training do.Ok ok Iâve been talking long enough. Buy the book. You wonât regret it!

Great Book for Anyone Considering Competitive Obedience
This is an easy to read and well layed out book that gives an overview of competitive obedience….where and how to focus your training, the building blocks of a successful dog/handler team, and a step by step of how to shape different behaviors, distraction proofing, etc. It covers A LOT but does so in such an organized fashion that it’s easy to digest as well as easy to refer back to which i will be doing quite a lot. I haven’t finished the entire book yet but so far, it’s the best book i’ve found on advanced/competitive obedience. I looked up Hannah Branigan prior to purchasing the book and I can see why she’s such a good trainer as the book is most definitely a product of someone with an organized mind and she is wonderful at breaking down literally every piece of competitive obedience. I’m shocked that someone gave this a bad rating because of the binding…lol…the binding is that of a standard book…come on!!

Awesome is right
I heard the author speak at a training expo and really liked her approach to training. The book is an extension of that. I’ve read dozens of books by many different trainers and hers ranks right up there with the best of them

Horrible binding, pages fall out!
Just got the book last night, binding is so weak/frail that the pages are tearing away as you turn the page! I havenât gotten far yet, but the context of the book looks great, canât wait to read it, I hope my replacement will be better bound!

Positive competition obedience training.
If you are looking for a way to use R+ training for competition obedience this is a great book. The author clearly describes how to go about training the exercises. Her writing is clear and written in an engaging voice.

This is an excellent book. I would give it a 5 star rating in a heartbeat. However the Kindle version is so poorly formatted that it makes navigating around difficult. It is not a book that you would typically read straight through cover to cover but rather flip around to the section you need. For example, the table of contents is not linked so you cannot tap on it to go to that section. Furthermore since the formatting on my device, a Samsung Tablet, the page numbers in the Table of Contents do not correspond to the pages listed. My choice for Kindle was due to a visual impairment, i would expect the hardcopy to be excellent.

I recommend this book even if you don’t plan on getting into competition. There are great exercises here that teach very useful skills to your dog.

I have been competing in Dog Obedience for the last 5 months and this book has helped me accelerate my skills. It is well written and almost like a manual. It needs reading carefully so that most value can be extracted from it.
