Beyond Obedience is a revolutionary new training program for you and your dog from one of our country’s foremost animal advocates and holistic practitioners. The idea that your canine companion is a fully emotional being and acutely sensitive to your changing feelings and moods is the foundation of April Frost’s original and highly effective training program.
One of the most difficult aspects of training a dog is clearly communicating your intentions. Beyond Obedience is the first book to work on the way you communicate with your dog, providing you with the necessary tools to truly understand how your dog’s mind works and, therefore, how you can create an effective and mutually satisfying relationship.
Drawing on her extensive experiences as an animal behaviorist, Frost teaches you that training your dog should not be a tedious chore limited to exerting physical and psychological control over an animal’s drives, but instead an enriching and spiritually fulfilling experience–gratifying for both human and animal. Frost discusses such essential concepts as mutual respect, unconditional love, mental and emotional discipline, and your expectations and priorities. She shows you how the insights gained from working with your dog can have positive, far-ranging effects on many areas of your life. Beyond Obedience offers valuable insight into the emotional bonds that enrich the lives of animals and their companions.

A new, holistic approach to dog training.
“Beyond Obedience” truly takes the reader beyond basic training methods. Ms. Frost introduces a new way of thinking about our dogs, their needs, and their intelligence, then guides us, through examples and exercises, to a higher understanding of canine psychology and personality. Only after helping us to gain that understanding does she tie this new-found knowledge in with “traditional” training methods, then teaches us how to apply both in the most effective way.Filled with stories from her years of experience, the book sometimes leaves you smiling at canine antics, sometimes teary-eyed at inevitable failures. Yet, in the end, readers willing to work through the exercises to “connect” with their pets will come away with a much deeper understanding and appreciation of their canine companions, and training sessions are bound to become a pleasure for both handler and dog. Using even just a few of the methods, I personally achieved much greater success in training a very difficult puppy.

A good insight about dogs
This was recommended to me when I first got my new dog and 4 years later I do go back to reference to it. Gives insightful details as to how “dogs work & function” giving me a better understanding as to why they behave the way they do……as dogs…not people.

Fair Presentation
It is tempting to dismiss Frost as a quack. Some of her experiences with dogs and clients are so marvelous I found myself not believing all of them. But, her approach to dog handling should awaken your spirit and inspire you to do better with your dog. Dog obedience is something that humans expect to come naturally from dogs. Frost, though, encourages her readers to earn that obedience by respecting the animal for what they are: dogs. She tries to convey that dogs, most times, have a will of their own. So, if that “will” is not acknowledged the dog will be a “different” dog. In other words, a respected dog is more obedient than a casually treated dog. I think she gives a fair presentation. However, for most dog handlers she would be considered a quack because she’s asking her readers’ to treat their dog better than they probably treat themselves. I enjoyed the book.

If you love dogs.
I believe there IS a beyond obedience. The relationships we establish with our dogs should be so much more. My dog Rosebud is wonderful, I have no complaints with her behavior or our relationship, however I learned a lot from April Frost’ book. Although Rosebud is already age ten there are a few suggestions I will try. The author tells the story of an extreme rescue of 13 dogs she worked to save These were all ‘throw away animals”. On a rescue mission many dogs were found in such deplorable conditions that only the 13 Frost chose and took home were deemed savable. It is a terrible story. April Frost closed her business to devote 6 months of her time to work with the 13 dogs. Not all were saved but it is a heart breaking story of day to day care in almost hopeless circumstances. It is worth reading the book just for this one experience. However, there are so many stories and all are interesting. I got a bit lost in the pages and pages of dog training information. Had I needed advice I would have read this with more interest. It is a good book if you love dogs.

The author is really out there but I was trying to keep an open mind, beacuse I do believe in energy in ineracting with animals (and with others). She advocates love to train and heal, but when you get to the trainning section, she explains how to use the choke chain to train things like sit, wich I am totally against (me and the rest of modern, enlightened positive dog trainers). I taught she made no sense at all and could not even keep on reading the rest of the book.
