It is my go to- as I train my dogs.
With this book, it’s important to add a bit of context to my situation. I am new to being a dog guardian, and I have two adult dogs with partial training (they are not extreme leash pullers -unless they see a rabbit, they are housetrained, etc), so I was not under the stress of a puppy or a dog with more significant issues (aggression towards people, etc.). I also like reading and using multiple resources (videos, etc.) So, I am not only using this book to train my dogs.I am new to training, and I found this book to be a great place to start. I like the beginning sections where you learn about dogs’ overall character, their overview of the basic commands and then the chapters with the sequences of how to teach different commands. While I’ve successfully taught leave it, come here, touch and stay, they are not yet perfect. Sometimes, if my dog is distracted (outside), it’s a hit or miss, but I notice the improvement. Reality also is that when training a dog, you learn a lot about your level of patience and your attitude towards giving up. I understood that books/videos will only be 100% effective if I am consistent. This looks like revisiting things that I thought my dogs were already great at.This is a good reference book and an excellent place to start if you like taking your time reading when learning skills.

Good book for a beginner
This is a good book for a beginner. I was looking to refresh my knowledge. Methods have sure changed since I learned dog training 30 plus year ago.

Best Book for dog training!
I’ve looked at many books on dog training and this one is the easiest and most practical to use. I’ve given it a gifts twice and both dog owners used it and got good results. We’re all very pleased with this book! I’ve had very good luck with the “for Dummies” series of books and this one is no exception. If you get/have a dog you need this book!

A LOT of information.
Great information but, I was looking for a training philosophy/pragmatic approach. 121 pages in and were not training. Great info for new pet owner.

Excellent book for dog training with canine psychology. A must for people with dog or puppy.

I wish I had this book 8 years ago when I first had my Golden Doodle. Everything I have been doing repeatedly for years has been wrong. My dog jumps up onto other people. I have turned my back on her, got others to turn their backs to no avail. You should teach your dog to sit when it meets other people. When it sits it gets the fuss. Few weeks in and this is working! Numerous other tips in this book. Amazing.

I have some experience with my previous three dogs and bought this book as a refresher. I think for first time owners this can be an interesting read, but treat it as one for the shelf that you can use to consult whenever you need it. If you want to teach tricks, probably I’d recommend looking for another book that is specifically focusing on tricks.
